Xylophanes tersa is found in the Americas from the southern Great Lakes and the northeastern United States to northern Argentina, and in the West Indies; occasionally strays to Canada. This species flies year-round in the tropics and from May to October in the north. The wingspan is 60-80 mm. The forewing is pale brown with dark brown lengthwise lines. The hindwing is dark brown with a band of whitish marks. The abdomen is pointed. Adults take nectar from deep-throated flowers, including honeysuckles (Lonicera spp.), Mirabilis spp. (Nyctaginaceae), etc. The larvae feed on various species of Rubiaceae, Bignoniaceae, and Fabaceae.
